Baby and toddler toys are monitored by the government with safety regulations to ensure that manufacturers place specific labels on toys for recommended ages of use. You should follow these guidelines at least, when choosing safe toys for your children. Yet, you may want to play even a closer amount of attention to the toys they have. Even with the best intentions, there is no way to know how a child may manipulate a toy and potentially hurt themselves or others with it.

Age Appropriate

The age restrictions placed on baby toys and toddler toys are there for a reason. These toys may have small pieces to them that small children may put into their mouths. They may also have working pieces where fingers can get snapped or pinched in the process. Small hands can get stuck in some devices, too. Never give a toy with a choking hazard to toddlers or babies, as their first reaction is to put things in their mouths. Of course, it also makes sense that the younger child will not use many of the older toys for children properly. Not only could this be a risk for their safety, but it will likely frustrate them, too.

Look Closely At All Toys

All types of toys could have the potential of being an injury for the child. For example, most people love to give their children a cute, cuddly stuffed animal to play with. While these dolls, action figures and stuffed items may be a great toy, some do contain potential choking hazards. Can an eye or accessory pop off these items and go in the child’s mouth? If it can happen, assume it will happen.

When choosing toys, you should look at the design of the toy. How can this hurt your child? A sharp edge on the toy can easily cut or scratch them. You may find a wheel that pops off the car. You may find that if the child chews on the toys too long they could rip it and choke on the plastics. For toys that are electronic, be sure they are safe toys for the child’s age. Battery compartments can come off, fingers can get stuck in keys and the toy can be tossed around which may break it.

What’s It Made From?

In today’s eco friendly environment, not only should you look for safe toys that fit within specific requirements for choking and safe play, but also from what the toy is made. A variety of products is on the market that is eco friendly and just as fun to play with. For example, you may wish to look for toys made from recycled products or made from organic cotton instead of man-made products.

It is also important to know what is contained in the toy. For some children, especially those who suffer from allergies or who have sensitive skin, fabric dyes and chemicals contained in the toys can be harmful to them.

What To Look For

When buying toys, keep these things in mind. Safe toys that fit within these requirements are out there and easy to find, too.

Look for toys without strings, which can wrap around their neck and choke the child. Some toys may be comprised of strings wrapped around objects. Look for these and avoid buying them.

The size of the toy is important of course for swallowing risks. Be sure that anything that could come off the toy is large enough not to fit into the child’s mouth.

Avoid peeling surfaces or toys with any type of material in them that could potentially be dangerous if the toy is broken open.

Perhaps the most important protection for children is to give your child supervision when playing with toys. Even safe toys can be picked up and thrown or dropped on a foot. It is important to watch your child interact with the toy. When you notice them doing something that could potentially be dangerous, take the toy away from them. Over time, teaching your child how to play with toys correctly can limit problems, but nothing will protect them better than your watchful eye.

Now that you’ve got a baby crib, the next thing you’ll need to get is a crib set. The majority of bedding sets include a number of pieces – but do you really need them all? To be honest, the only thing you really need is a couple of crib sheets, because modern crib safety standards recommend keeping cribs free of all soft bedding. If you want to get the most for your money, skip the crib set and the useless (but cute) accessories. Instead, invest in a half dozen comfortable, high quality crib sheets.

Suffocation is a serious concern for babies, so remove all soft bedding, including bumper pads and blankets. If you’re worried about baby getting to cold, put on some warm pajamas or a swaddling blankets instead. Sleep sacks are worn like clothing, but have a closed “bag” at the legs to keep baby warm. If you interested in a swaddling blanket, you might want to investigate some of the more modern styles that aid in getting the right fit. Swaddling is supposed to mimic the close quarters of the uterus, and it comforts many newborns. You will be holding your baby a lot, so you might still want a blanket or comforter for those times, especially if you’ve had a winter baby. But just keep in mind that the quilt doesn’t go into the crib when baby does.

Another crib accessory is a sleep positioner – a kind of foam wedge designed to keep baby on his back. It’s supposed to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). But young babies are not able to roll over, so if you put them to bed on their backs, they’ll stay on their backs. And by the time they are able to roll onto their tummies, SIDS is no longer such a serious concern. The argument becomes even less convincing when you realize that foam wedges are a kind of soft bedding that can become a suffocation hazard.

Other items included in a bedding set can include a window valance, diaper stacker, toy bag, and crib skirt. Keep in mind what you and your baby actually need, though. These will probably not make the list.

If you really care about the look of the nursery (and who doesn’t?), then thing about gender neutral baby bedding like Hot Cocoa crib bedding. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}

lightweight stroller

For the new parents who love to spend time out of doors being active, they will most likely be interested in finding the type of stroller that will allow them to continue to be active and include the baby as well. Parents who want to have a good, lightweight stroller that can also function as a jogging stroller will be happy to discover the Baby Jogger City Series.

The Baby Jogger strollers are perfect for the mom or dad who wants to do some serious jogging while taking the baby on a bit of an outing. One of the things that all of the Baby Jogger models have is an excellent mechanism that allows it to turn easily and corner well while remaining stable so that the baby is always safe, secure and comfortable.

The Baby Jogger City Series of strollers are part of the premier line of baby products that are manufactured and distributed by the Baby Jogger Company. It was founded by Phil Baechler, who was a journalist at the time that he started the company. Baechler enjoyed jogging with his baby but found that the traditional stroller he was using wasn’t really up for the task.

As a result, Baechler began working up ideas for way to modify the standard, traditional stroller and make it into something that would work better for his needs. Eventually, he ended up designing a new breed of stroller that had the right function, feel and maneuverability that made it perfect for jogging. He called his new, baby trend creation the “Baby Jogger.”

The original Baby Jogger stroller was a bit hit almost immediately and soon the company followed up with an expanded model called “The Twinner,” which is a double stroller, designed to accommodate two children. These jogging strollers became popular because they were very convenient to use anywhere, in just about any situation, not just for jogging.

One of the things that have set apart the Baby Jogger strollers is how easily they can be turned. All of the models of baby joggers from this innovative company are able to make easy and tight turns in stores, sidewalks, or any other location where the parent might find themselves with their youngster. It is the 6″ swivel wheel in the front and the 12″ wheels in the rear that help to make the Baby Jogger models so easy to navigate, even in crowded conditions.

Another innovation that is a feature of the Baby Jogger strollers is an optional conversion kit for the front wheels. With this kit, the parent can quickly and easily transform the 4-wheeled stroller into a 3-wheeled model when needed, which provides even more maneuverability and allows the parent to negotiate turns even better.

It is safe to say that the Baby Jogger City Series has a strong following of happy parents who simply love the ease of handling their jogging stroller and the way that it collapses quickly for fast storage. These strollers are heavier than other lightweight stroller models but parents say they appreciate that because they can hang a heavy diaper bag or purse from the back and know that there is no danger of it tipping. One of the other features parents enjoy is the adjustable sun cover that helps keep the sun off of delicate skin.

Every parent’s ultimate concern is baby safety. One of the key elements in that plan is selecting the right safety seat for the car. Keep these tips in mind when looking for the ideal design.

The first things you need to look at are weight and age. Infants under age one should be provided with a safety seat specifically tailored to their size. It still needs to be facing the rear, and shouldn’t be used with an older baby.

Those older than one but less than four will weigh on average between 20-40 lbs. Of course, they’re also taller than small babies, and they keep increasing in height as they get older. That opens up the possibility of a forward-facing car seat, which is a little more convenient for parents. It should still be installed in the back seat, though.

The good news is that you don’t have to give up convenience to achieve these goals. Many models are convertible. This means that they can be switched from facing backward to facing forward with just a few moves. But don’t forget about the specifications concerning weight and age.

It’s essential that the car seat you use meets some minimum standards. It’s important to look for a seat with a five point harness feature. So the parents can use the car’s safety belt to fasten the baby seat at the shoulders, hips and between the legs. This gives a more secure and stable base.

It’s helpful to have an overhead shield, too. These padded covers circle down and around the infant. AT-shield is another option; this is a padded attachment for the should straps, in the shape of a T of course.

Choose a style that has a tether on top that attaches to a properly installed anchor in the car. This provides additional safety. Some have a system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). Therefore, there’s no need to use the safety belts in the car which are really intended for adults and older children. Instead, the safety seat is fastened only to the anchors.

A baby car safety seat that makes it easy to safely and securely add or remove padding, blankets and more provides additional comfort and safety. At the same time, parents have to spend less time adjusting the seat to make a good fit. That’s a win-win situation for both. Some even have integrated travel vests that can be buckled around the child.

That same double theme of safety and convenience is carried on by seat designs that make it easy to insert and adjust the restraining straps. Parents are busy folks and it’s easy to succumb to the temptation to take a short cut. But no one wants to sacrifice safety. A design that requires only a few seconds to install or move the seat satisfies all those needs.
